Day 2--What do you think of the ODRL?

Look up the website of the Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL) Initiative at http://odrl.net/ and describe, in your own words, what it is and what it does. Additionally, discuss what you think of this project and its mission.

Digital Rights - Who owns that? Where did it originate? Or better yet, "Hey I didn't say you could use that!"

The Internet has been a great and valuable tool in the realm of sharing thoughts, expressing ideas, and has simply provided a majority of the population, a way to reach an ever-growing audience. Along with all of this comes the need for protecting all of those works and the rights of the originators.

I feel that the ODRL is a double-edged sword; as a budding designer and graphic artist, I would love to ensure that I get the credit for my hard work. However, many people thrive by taking an original piece of work and reshaping it, adding our own twists, spins, and value, in the end, making it their own... "Building a better mousetrap" or so to speak.

In the big picture, I am in favor of what they are trying to accomplish with protection of rights, so long as it doesn't choke the creative process to death.

he Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL) is a proposed language for the Digital Rights Management (DRM) community for the standardisation of expressing rights information over content. The ODRL is intended to provide flexible and interoperable mechanisms to support transparent and innovative use of digital resources in publishing, distributing and consuming of electronic publications, digital images, audio and movies, learning objects, computer software and other creations in digital form. The ODRL has no license requirements and is available in the spirit of "open source" software.

I don't know if I misinterpreted the definition of ODRL but it sounds like to me that it is basically an organization that is fighting the rights of copyrighted material! It seems that the main purpose is to enable digital content available for personal use however you want it? The question is what exactly are they talking about????

ODRL is one of those peculiar sites, that never clearly or concisely defines in plain English what it is. It is ridiculous, however after spending a few moments interpreting the mission statement and about us section, I concluded that this site is a liberal lobbyist site. These people actually have the audacity to assume that intellectual property doesn’t truly exist, and that the regulations on the content of internet sites should be reduced drastically to encourage information exchange. Point blank, these people don’t want to protect you. Sickening…done.

The word Rhetoric is a Greek word meaning the ability to discern the available means of persuasion In any given situation. Digital Rhetoric is related to data in the numerical sense of communication using ones and zeros to encode and decode information between people or machines. Some examples of digital rhetoric are e-mail, electronic slides, web pages, blogs and video games. Digital Rhetoric also uses more than just hardware and software to grab your attention and also provided a new avenue for political resistance.

It sounds like the ODRL is an organization that is pushing for less stringent copyright laws regarding online material and its use by others for purposes of their own. Not sure where I stand on this as I can see how I would hurt those who created the original pieces of work but; on the other hand, it would be beneficial at the same time as people can share ideas building on each other.

Digital rights, WHAT, it's a crazy thought but it's actually happening. The government is in the process and already in acting laws that govern what is seen and accessed on the world wide web. Also there are major corporations that are trying to make the web a pay by site, it's not like that don't make enough money, the web was set up as a place to go and find anything that you want and pay for what you want and not feel like you have to or feel watched over. Leave the web alone.

caI think that ODRL is a great way to keep things in order for those people who like to steal peoples ideas and make profit off it. I think that you have the right to download things because the internet is a open book to those that are using it, But because it is there does not give you the right to make the ideas your own, thats wrong. The ODRL to me is company that keeps movies, music ,etc from being shown to the public before it's time and i think that it is not working because the movie black market is at a rise

ODRL is the use of digital all digital resources. The digital world expects the best out of everything that can be twisted up or changed a little to make a whole lot easier.

i believe we need to protect our creative rights has individuals digital media can come many form for example, video games, pod casts, downloading music from the internet, e-mail, digital cameras and u-tube. I enjoy downloading music off limewire because some of the songs I download I cannot find anywhere else. the way I could find the specific song is to either go th the web site and buy the cds and spend over 300 or 400 bucks just to make a banging mix CD.

This is from ORDL Initiative. I guess it's the rights to publish what you want on the internet without being punished.
